I was the General Manager of an S&K Menswear in Louisiana before it closed down Novemeber of last year.

S&K was actually trying to reinvent itself, but it was alienating it's core customer. The company was trying to move towards a high fashion, urban company instead of a traditional suit store.

Most of the problems also came with the fact the company always was a debt free company until Joe Oliver began an aggressive expansion of the company and loans were aquired to accomplish this.

This is an awesome post. I especially agree with the notion that newspapers need to focus on making local content stronger. The local community is the bread and butter of daily newspapers. Let's get back to the basics of what makes a city tick and its people thrive - and leverage new media to make these stories come alive in ways that could not happen in the past. New tools to make great reporting even greater.

Unsolicited advice from a long time marketer.

Should S&K really be trying to sell or save themselves I hope they read this blog and fix some fundamental things.
Stuart or Jonathan, this is for you.

You have an important brand during these trying times known for value clothing. Consider a 360 degree approach to your customer. Make sure EVERYTHING you do is in line with what your brand stands for. this means from the way you answer the phones, the way your greeter is dressed and how the image of your store is viewed by the consumer.

Retrial is nearly impossible. Give a customer a bad experience and think they are going to return when there are so many similar choices within a mile of your store—not likely.

Perhaps Stuart and Jonathan should take a walk-about their own stores and see for themselves what they are offering the public and ask themselves, how can I better meet the needs of my customer? Having a wall full of nice pants in one size does more harm then good. You might as well take them off the shelves and put them on ebay where there may be people searching for an item in just that size.

I for one will be interested in seeing if these guys are serious about turning this 40 year old brand around. Right now is the time to revitalize a brand in this position, I hope they have the wisdom and enough commitment to see it through.

Yes, connectivity is what newspapers should be all about. Since I retired as chief spokesperson for McDonald's, in leacures to college students studying pubric relations, I've been saying that the profession is miss-named -- it should be called "public relationships," as it is really all about building two-way relationships with media and also directly with targeted audiences. Whether it's building "connectivity" or building "public relationships," it's all about enriching a communications continuum in society, and changes in technology and cost efficiency continue to redefine how that continuum is structured and maintained. But just as changes in industrial technology result is massive dislocations of employees, the changes we see underway in communications technology mandated dislocations, retraining and redefines journalism and the "public relationship" profession. the article above outlines a good path for newspapers to take in meeting these dramatic challenges.
